DIY Natural Laundry Detergent: Fresh, Clean, and Chemical-Free

DIY Natural Laundry Detergent: Fresh, Clean, and Chemical-Free

If you’re anything like me, you’ve tried countless “natural” detergents only to end up with dingy whites or clothes that still smell less-than-fresh. Frustrated, I decided to create my own laundry soap—and I couldn’t be happier with the results. This simple, homemade detergent uses a single bar of 100% Coconut Oil Soap (available here: [Your Soap Link]) and a few pantry staples to give you fresh-smelling, clean laundry without any harsh chemicals.

If you'd like to watch how easy it is to make this recipe, take a look at the video on my IG Page.

Why Go Natural?

  • Gentle on Fabrics & Skin: No synthetic fragrances or dyes to irritate sensitive skin.

  • Safe for the Planet: Biodegradable ingredients mean no toxic runoff into waterways.

  • Economical: A 24-load batch costs pennies per wash.

  • Performance: Tackles dirt, grease, and odors as effectively as store-bought brands—plus you choose your own scent!

Ingredients (Yields 24 Loads)

  • 4 oz (114 g) 100% Coconut Oil Soap (grated)

  • 14.8 oz (420 g) Borax

  • 14.8 oz (420 g) Washing Soda

  • 13.1 oz (371 g) Baking Soda

  • 0.35 oz (9 g) Essential Oil of Your Choice

Directions

  1. Grate the Soap

    • Use a box grater or shredding disc in your food processor to grate the coconut oil soap finely.

  2. Combine Dry Ingredients

    • Add the grated soap, borax, washing soda, and baking soda to the food processor. Pulse until everything is evenly mixed.

  3. Add Essential Oil

    • Pour in your favorite essential oil (lavender, lemon, or peppermint all work beautifully) and process again until fully incorporated.

  4. Store & Use

    • Transfer to an airtight container. Use ¼ cup per normal load, more for larger or heavily soiled loads.

Important: This detergent is a powder and should be added directly into the drum with your laundry—not into the detergent dispenser drawer. This ensures it dissolves properly and cleans effectively.

Why This Recipe Works

  • Coconut Oil Soap cuts through grease and lifts dirt without harsh sulfates.

  • Borax & Washing Soda boost cleaning power and water softening.

  • Baking Soda neutralizes odors and brightens fabrics.

  • Essential Oils leave a light, fresh scent that won’t overpower or irritate.

Give this DIY detergent a try and never settle for less-than-clean laundry again. Ready to get started? Grab your bar of 100% Coconut Oil Soap and enjoy sparkling, fresh-smelling clothes—naturally!
